Warning: our content is super addictive.
Starting a business is always risky but can be super exciting and oh so rewarding. Take our boss lady, Jade, who has started three businesses herself, bought a business and if that’s not enough, she went on to start a sidearm of that business!! We’re not legal beagles or accountant extraordinaires – we’re just plain old marketers who have some tips for getting a new business off to a good start!
Business Name
When it comes to sorting budgets, getting legal advice, and setting up the right accounts, we can’t give you advice on any of that. But the one legal thing that we do want to weigh in on, is your business name! Here’s how to go about it:
Firstly, coming up with a name. As a start, we recommend checking out is ASIC business register to see if it’s even available
Things like registering a business name, trademarking a name, googling for other people who have a similar name all fall under the legal side of things, but at least ASIC gives you a great starting point before you get hung up on a name
When you’re searching on ASIC, take the time to check available domains and handles while you’re at it (Namecheckr is a great tool for this)
Once your name is set, the next step is to secure your domains and social media handles, ASAP!
Logo development
We get it - not everyone goes to a professional to get their logo designed, but remember, your logo is the cornerstone of your identity. Did you know that 30% of our neurons are devoted to processing visuals? Versus the 8% for touch and 3% for hearing. We’re super visual creatures. Your logo is going to be everywhere that your business is seen. However, while it’s super important, don’t get this confused with the need to get it perfect. So, whoever you choose to create your logo for you, we recommend requesting:
o A variety of file types: EPS, PNG, JPEG, etc
o Various formats: full colour, mono, with and without tagline, etc
o A style guide with font and colour breakdowns so that it’s reproduced correctly wherever you use it
Start with what you need
When it comes to your marketing, take it from us, you don’t have to have everything from the get-go such as your website, brochures, or all your socials up and running. Rather, just start with what you need and what is manageable and realistic for you.
Your main goal should be to get clients. Think about who are they, what do their daily lives look like, and what marketing they currently consume. It’s as simple as thinking about your target market and setting up just what you need to start.
