Yes, proofing can suck, but the consequences of not doing it can suck a whole lot more. In this week’s shorty soundbite episode of Marketing + Margaritas, Jade breaks down her top tips for checking proofs that are sent your way.
We get it, you hand over a sack of cash to someone with the instructions “do the thing, please + thank-you”, + now they want you to check it before it goes upl?! Audacious, we know. But as an agency, it’s super important that the client has final say on what goes up. We NEED you to give that approval so that we know 100% that you’re happy with the thing you’ve paid for.
So, what are Jade’s top three tips to make sure this process goes as quickly + as smoothly as possible?
First up, double check ALL the facts.
No one knows your business better than you. Nothing feels worse than going through the effort of organising new business cards or a billboard, or whatever it might be, only for some key bit of info to be wrong. A little bit of effort here will save you a lot of headache later.
Secondly, does this material make sense + adequately explain your business?
Regardless of the marketing medium, any piece of marketing should quickly let the customer know who you are + what you do. If they don’t know who you are, they won’t be able to find your website or socials accounts to get in touch. If they don’t know what you do, they’re not going to care enough to dig that little bit deeper.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a billboard or a meta ad, those two questions need to be answered quickly + clearly if the audience is to give a damn about your business.
Lastly, do you want to read the thing?
Chances are, if you find yourself tuning out when proofing your stuff, your audience will too. If you can’t be bothered to read the thing, why should they? We know that things like capability statements can be more of a formality for some businesses but if you’re sending that through for a tender, the person on the other end is going to be reading who knows how many. Make sure yours stands out!
In summary, yes, proofing sucks. But the alternative is way worse. Double check your stuff + we guarantee you it will save you bigger headaches down the line. Help us to help you 😉
