In this week's episode of Marketing + Margaritas, Jade is joined by Jaime Newborn to get a refresher on what it's like to be an in-house marketer. With a varied professional life across multiple industries, Jaime is a wealth of info for a bunch of marketing scenarios.
So, what are Jaime’s top tips for all the budding (and experienced!) in-house marketer’s out there?
Your marketing plan is more about the thought process than the actual plan itself
You should go into every marketing endeavour with a plan, but don't be afraid to pivot when things don't work out how you thought. The most important part of the plan is the thought that goes into it. When new info comes up, or if things don't pan out, the thought you put into your plan initially will allow you to quickly adapt to suit any road bumps.
Be realistic about your capabilities
For all marketing, but especially for in-house marketing, you need to be realistic about what can be achieved with your current time + budget. As much you may want to do everything yourself, be sure to temper those expectations with what you can reasonably accomplish. An extravagant multi-layer cake where each layer is half baked is way worse than a simple single tier cake that's baked to perfection.
Try + find the passion in your work
Look, we get it, not every campaign or work task is going to "spark joy", as Marie Kondo would put it. But if you can find an angle where you get excited about an idea, it will make the work on it even more effective. If you can find that passion + share that with your audience, that's a surefire way to drive engagement.
And lastly, Jaime’s wrap up tip (and no, we didn’t ask her to say this!!):
Figure out what you can outsource
It doesn't matter how skilled you are, your biggest asset as an in-house marketer is time. You won't be able to do everything by yourself, so get comfortable outsourcing things. Whether it's to an agency, a freelancer, or other people in your company, getting other people in your corner will help free up your time to handle the things that only you can sort!
