Directors' Circle: Jarryd Townson, Split Spaces

Jarryd Townson from Split Spaces is more than just a man with a beard, he's a man with a giant beard. He's also a man with a giant heart and an inspiring connection to the Mackay community. And he’s the first cab off the rank in our business profiling series – the Directors’ Circle.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I never really had a clear direction for my future as a kid, however business always intrigued me and a Business Owner/ Entrepreneur future was always high on the agenda.

What’s your favourite part about being a business owner?

The ability to make impactful changes, implement challenging and exciting opportunities and the freedom to decide… what comes next!

What do you wish you’d known before you started?

Nothing… Battle scars, to me, is what business is all about. When I was being told some of the best lessons about life and business, I wasn’t ready to listen. So every scar I have received, has been well deserved and it really makes you more resilient, allowing you to think on your feet.

What’s your ultimate key to success?

Look with your mind, feel with your heart and discover opportunities that you can drive forward with passion and commitment.

How do you stay motivated when challenges arise?

Can you please repeat the question? Because challenges = motivation. I am personally motivated by challenges (sometimes too much). I don’t think anyone has ever witnessed me winning any easy battles. So for me to stay motivated… I challenge myself or other people.

What are your non-work habits that help with your life-work balance?

‘Work’ or ‘Job’ are not in my vocabulary. I operate my careers as lifestyles and often forget to switch off. I have had a few ‘Jobs’ in my life and, needless to say, they didn’t last long. But the one thing that keeps me grounded and gently persuades and reminds me about my time to switch off… is my amazing wife! She by far has the hardest role in our household.

Give a shout out to three local businesses, and tell us why.

There are so so many amazing local businesses in this town and to ask me to only choose three, is like asking me to eat yellow snow.

But in the interest of not being a party pooper…

These businesses, in more ways than one, are not only very supportive of our community, but of Split Spaces and multiple community events that keep our community moving.
