Directors' Circle: David Tranter, TranTech Computers
When someone asks for a recommendation, I tend to give two options – so that they can compare and choose which one is right for them. But – when anyone asks for IT, there is only one provider I ever recommend – David Tranter and the team at TranTech Computers. Ok, so Tranter and I went to high school together and he’s a good friend, but that doesn’t even make the list for why this guy is the best IT man in Mackay. And now I’ve made him get in the Directors’ Circle hot seat, I’m sure I can look forward to payback at some time!
Why did you decide to start your own business?
The company I was working for was taken over by a larger company, so before takeover I handed in my resignation and never joined the new business. I felt it was a good time to make a break and see if I could do this business thing for myself - I had always wanted my own business.
If you could start again, what’s something you would have done differently in your business? When I was starting, I missed a good friend’s wedding overseas - I would have liked to have taken a break and made that happen.
What habits help you to run your business more effectively?
Fast response time. For better or worse, we have found this to be very effective in the business.
How do you create an awesome work environment, to attract and retain staff?
I pay them and they come back? Seriously though, the team goes out together for lunch regularly, along with other social outings. When making decisions, we often involve the staff as it is going to affect them too.
What do you to do recharge when you’re feeling drained?
I go to the wakeboard park. No need for a boat or anyone else. Floating in the water for 10 minutes after falling off a jump is the most relaxation time I have - no phone calls, no computer questions.
Who is your hero and why?
My parents. No reason needed.

I have been married 10 years and have three little kids, my home life is LOUD!
