Directors' Circle: Linda Palmer, Goanna Brewing
While there are still some people who may not know that Mackay has its' very own brewery, Linda Palmer and the crew at Goanna Brewing are a wonderful addition to our business landscape. Creative, innovative and interesting - if you haven't taken a tour through the brewery yet (finished off with beer and cider tasting, paired with nibblies made from their products as well - delish!) then I highly recommend you do!
What’s your favourite part about being a business owner?
It gives me the flexibility to work with my husband 24/7. We mightn’t be in the same room or town even, but we both work on and in the businesses together.
What’s been the steepest learning curve since starting a business?
My background is as an economist, so I had no idea about marketing. I thought it just meant advertising on TV or in the newspaper – apparently not.
What happens in a typical day for you?
A typical day for me starts like so many other rural mums with school age kids – at dawn. Feeding children, cows, chooks, pigs, dog, cat, husband (notice the order of priority there), driving kids 30 minutes to school, brew beer, filter beer, test beer, sell beer (ok maybe that part’s not so typical). Then I race the sunset home to spend time with my cows!
Explain yourself in one word.

What is the best advice you have received recently, and still follow?
Don’t let the ugliness get you down.
What are your non-work habits that help with your life-work balance?
Most afternoons my husband and I spend time in the cattle yards with our droughtmasters. They are quite spoilt, being hand fed and brushed. I think they like spending time with us. It’s so relaxing. I’ve always liked the smell of cattle.
Give a shout out to three local businesses.
