Directors' Circle: Belinda Hassan, Mackay Funerals

Belinda Hassan from Mackay Funerals is one of those “pillar of the community” type people. Never mind that her business revolves around helping people through one of the most challenging times of their life, the community work this woman does is varied and exceptional. Thank you Belinda for sharing an insight into what makes you tick!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always said I wanted to be a doctor. Then I decided to leave school and get married at 16, and went on to have four children by the age of 22! While my job now isn’t really medical, it is definitely a caring profession, and one that I feel supports families through a very difficult time in their lives.

What do you consider the key to success?

Teamwork and integrity! I don’t believe anyone can be successful without support and assistance from others. I’ve been lucky to have some great people around me who have definitely contributed to my success. And integrity is imperative – always do what you say you’re going to do, and endeavor to do the right thing, even when no-one is watching.

How do you stay motivated when challenges arise?

Positive self-talk and confidence in your abilities is important. I always face a challenge head-on, and break it down into smaller portions. And seek help when you need it.

How do you generate new ideas for the business?

That’s a difficult one in my industry. I try to think of things that I would like someone to do for me when I experience grief or loss, and offer that support to the families we assist. It really is the little things that count. Offering special keepsakes etc to people, and providing extra support when needed. I’m also currently involved in a statewide reference group focusing on end of life care. There is much to be done in this area.

What is the best advice you have received recently, and still follow?

No-one is going to stand up at your funeral and say “She had a really expensive couch and great shoes”. Don’t make life about stuff. I tell my kids all the time, that life is about making memories, not collecting “stuff”.

Tell us something about yourself that is not on your LinkedIn profile?

In October this year, I’m trekking around three-quarters of the way up Mt Everest to Mera Peak. I love trekking and adventure travel, which some people find weird – that I spend my holidays doing these crazy things, and not relaxing like most normal people.

Give a shout out to three local businesses.

Carroll’s News - Juanita and Darryl are huge supporters of our community, without ever seeking recognition.

Woodman’s Axe Espresso - best coffee in town by far. Wouldn’t get through the day without them.

Active Adrenalin Performance Coaching - Trish is the best personal trainer around. Her programs are amazing, and her recent RIN award proves this.
