Who's your local legend?

Local Legends is an engaging community campaign where everyday people will be acknowledged for extraordinary caring acts within their communities.

Individuals can be nominated as a caring member of their local community and the nominations will be judged by a panel. Winners of the Local Legend Awards will receive $1,000, be publicly acknowledged and Mackay Funerals / City Funerals will also donate $1,000 to the Local Legend’s chosen charity or community group.

How are people nominated and who decides on the winners?
Community members can nominate people within their community who they feel are Local Legends and are deserving of recognition for the contributions they have made to their local community.

Nominations will need to include a brief summary of why the nominated individual deserves recognition as a Local Legend (approx. 50 to 100 words). Nominations can be made either online or by visiting Mackay Funerals at 189 Alfred Street, Mackay or City Funerals at 105 Sydney Street, to fill in a paper nomination form.

The nomination period will run until 31st October 2017. Nominations will then be collected and judged by a panel of chosen representatives and a winner in each region announced in November 2017. Nominations are open to people 18 years and over who have been engaged within their community and deserve to be recognised for their efforts.

How are the nominees verified?
Nominees will need to have contact details supplied as well as a reference to the charity, organisation, community group or business they have been involved with in order to verify their nomination as legitimate.

Who supplies the prize money?
The $1,000 Local Legend Award and the $1,000 donation to the selected charity will be funded by Mackay Funerals / City Funerals. The judging panel will consist of: Regional Manager Managers of both Mackay Funerals and City Funerals Two Community representatives – the Mayor, Councillor Greg Williamson, and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Amanda Camm.

What happens once the Winner has been decided?
The winner of the Local Legends Award will be notified by phone by one of the judges on the day of judging. Where possible we would like to invite local media to come to the presentation of the Local Legends Award to the Winner and a representative from the winner’s nominated charity. A date within one week of the winner being announced will be selected to present the winner with the Local Legends Award. People who need to be present include: judging panel, Local Legends award winner, representative from nominated charity and local media.
